Several myths have surrounded this surgical procedure, and one of the most prevalent over time is that it is a very painful procedure, which is why many people give up doing it besides being one of the most frequent questions in my rhinoplasty consultation.
But are all rhinoplasty painful?
I have to answer that it DEPENDS on each case; in most cases that are for aesthetic corrections, it is an uncomfortable but very tolerable procedure.
But why is rhinoplasty said to be painful?
You have to start with the definition of it in order to answer this question. Rhinoplasty is the procedures we perform to modify the structure of the nose for aesthetic or functional purposes, and it can be surgical as well as non-surgical. We can also divide it according to its approach, or way of operating, if it is by open approach making an external incision, or if it is by closed approach, making intramucosal incisions (in the internal nasal mucosa), in the two types of approach the pain is similar.
Once the nose is approached for its correction, it is necessary to define if only soft tissues, skin and cartilage are going to be modified or bone tissue must also be corrected (most of the cases) and this is where the procedure can be more painful. For some patients, when we need to modify the nasal bone structure, we perform it through specific and planned fractures before surgery, and these fractures are added to the little amount of subcutaneous cellular tissue that we have in the nose and the great inflammation, of slow recovery, which causes bruising, discomfort and pain.
Another reason to consume a good supply of fluids and electrolytes is INFLAMMATION after surgery, the body responds with oedema or inflammation in the first days, which can lead to an electrolyte imbalance if you are not replacing it in the diet.
Fortunately, surgical procedures advance as well as the techniques and the pharmacological industry, and now we have more refined surgical techniques that allow us to obtain better results, and combined with the application of different medications intraoperatively and in the recovery period decrease from importantly the pain and the feeling of discomfort.
